The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation (NCCF) announces nine Service Learning Mini-Grants to five school districts that include projects that are artistic, animal service related, and community inspired. Highlighted are three awards that are unique to this year’s program.
Toilet Talk. Students will research relevant topics such as opiate and alcohol abuse, healthy relationships, and more. They will create posters on these subjects to display in bathroom stalls changing out the information throughout the year. The goal is to raise awareness about important social and health-related issues at Dunkirk High School and Dunkirk Middle School.
Partnering with Pets. Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES juniors and seniors enrolled in the Animal Science Program will partner with the Lakeshore Humane Society to socialize pets preparing them for adoption. Students will disinfect cages, get pets ready for community adoption days, reinforce positive behaviors, assist with physical therapy for injured pets, and other day-to-day duties.
Fill Your Cup. Fredonia High School students will visit the WCA home and work one-on-one with the residents teaching them how to make individualized mugs. The students will fire the mugs in the school kiln, wrap them, and deliver the finished products to WCA residents.
Additional programs approved for the 2017 – 2018 school year include Brocton Central School – Beautifying Brocton Part 2 and Empty Bowls Project; Cassadaga Valley Central School – “Keys” to Success in Compassion and Kindness Counts; Fredonia High School – Empty Bowls Project and Canvas & Cans. The total dollar amount of grants awarded is $4,225.
The Service Learning Mini-Grant program began in 2013 with a Pilot Program in the Fredonia Central School District. Since 2013, the NCCF has awarded over 75 mini-grants totaling over $32,000. The program is funded through Community Funds and the yearly Applebee’s Flapjack Breakfast and Basket Raffle Fundraiser.
